08Przyszłość jest wyboremThe future is a choice

Co dalej. Pięć światów, jeden do wyboru. What next. Five worlds, one to choose.

The climate of 2100 is not a weather forecast — it is the sum of decisions we will take in the 2020s and 2030s. Scientists do not predict a single future; they compute several emission scenarios and show where each leads. The difference between them is not “a bit warmer” — it is the difference between a hard world and one in which large areas cease to be habitable.

1. Scenariusze IPCC: ile stopni do 21001. IPCC scenarios: how many degrees by 2100

Wartości poniżej to średnia z lat 2081–2100 względem 1850–1900.The IPCC uses five main scenarios (SSPs), from very rapid reduction to rising emissions. In all of them warming in 2021–2040 is about 1.5 °C — the next two decades are already “ordered”. The divergence begins later. The values below are the 2081–2100 mean relative to 1850–1900.

2. Ścieżki: co musiałoby się stać z emisjami2. Pathways: what would have to happen to emissions

The IPCC (Working Group III) computed how global greenhouse-gas emissions must fall to halt warming: for 1.5 °C by about 43 % by 2030 and 84 % by 2050 relative to 2019 (net-zero CO₂ around 2050); for 2 °C by 27 % by 2030 and 63 % by 2050 (net zero around 2070). The chart sets these pathways against what is actually happening. IPCC AR6 WG3 SPM C.1

4. Co mogą ludzie — uczciwie4. What people can do — honestly

First a truth uncomfortable for both sides of the dispute: individual choices alone will not stop warming — 70–80 % of emissions depend on how electricity, heat, steel and cement are made, i.e. on decisions by states and companies. But those decisions are taken under pressure from citizens, voters and consumers — and personal choices show what is possible and build norms. Below, what works most strongly according to research, in tonnes of CO₂ per person per year.

I zawód: transformacja to największy program inżynieryjny w historii, potrzebuje elektryków, instalatorów, planistów, prawników i nauczycieli.Actions not in the table because they are not measured in tonnes: voting and asking candidates about energy; taking part in local decisions (zoning, transport, district heating); where savings sit (funds financing coal vs renewables); conversation — research shows people change their minds through acquaintances, not statistics. And a profession: the transition is the largest engineering programme in history and needs electricians, installers, planners, lawyers and teachers.

5. Adaptacja: to, co nadejdzie tak czy inaczej5. Adaptation: what will come anyway

Nawet w najlepszym scenariuszu do 2050 r. będzie cieplej o ok. 1,5–1,7 °C. Even in the best scenario it will be about 1.5–1.7 °C warmer by 2050. Adaptation is not surrender but common sense: water retention and river renaturalisation instead of concreting (the 2024 flood showed the limits of levees), greenery and water in cities against heat, warning systems, resilient crop varieties, insurance, spatial planning away from floodplains. Every złoty spent on adaptation returns several times over in avoided losses — but adaptation has limits: ice sheets and reefs cannot be “adapted” to 3–4 °C. IPCC AR6 SYR

Do zapamiętaniaTo remember

  1. Do 2040 r. ocieplenie ok. 1,5 °C jest już przesądzone; rozjazd scenariuszy — od 1,4 do 4,4 °C w 2100 r. — zależy od emisji w najbliższych 20 latach. Obecne polityki prowadzą do ok. 2,7 °C.About 1.5 °C of warming by 2040 is already settled; the divergence of scenarios — 1.4 to 4.4 °C in 2100 — depends on emissions in the next 20 years. Current policies lead to about 2.7 °C.
  2. 1,5 °C wymaga cięcia emisji o ok. 43 % do 2030 r.; tymczasem wciąż rosną. Każdy rok zwłoki zjada 40+ Gt budżetu i podnosi końcową temperaturę.1.5 °C requires cutting emissions by about 43 % by 2030; meanwhile they are still rising. Every year of delay eats 40+ Gt of the budget and raises the final temperature.
  3. Największe dźwignie osobiste: samochód, loty, ogrzewanie, dieta — a ponad nimi głos, pieniądze i zawód. The biggest personal levers: car, flights, heating, diet — and above them your vote, money and profession. There is no “too late” threshold: every tenth of a degree matters.
