Co się dzieje. Co mierzymy i co widać.What is happening. What we measure and what we see.

Climate change is not a forecast — it is a measurement. Thermometers on land and ships since 1880, buoys and Argo floats in the ocean, satellites since the 1970s, ice cores reaching 800,000 years back. All these independent instruments say the same thing. Below is measured data only, not models.

1. Ziemia się ociepla — i coraz szybciej1. Earth is warming — and faster

Globalna średnia temperatura powierzchni to jedna liczba, która streszcza planetę: średnia z lądów i oceanów, dnia i nocy, wszystkich pór roku. NASA liczy ją z ok. 26 tysięcy stacji meteorologicznych i pomiarów temperatury wody z statków, boi i pływaków. Global mean surface temperature is one number that summarises the planet: an average over land and ocean, day and night, all seasons. NASA computes it from about 26,000 weather stations and sea-surface measurements from ships, buoys and floats. The chart shows the anomaly — the difference from the 1951–1980 mean — because anomalies are comparable between places while absolute temperatures are not.

Three things are visible to the naked eye. First, the trend: since the 1970s every decade has been warmer than the previous one. Second, acceleration: warming over 1970–2025 is several times faster than in the first half of the 20th century. Third, the 2023–2024 jump that surprised even climatologists — El Niño explains part of it, but not all.

Skąd „1,5 stopnia”?Where does “1.5 degrees” come from? The Paris target is measured against the pre-industrial era (1850–1900), NASA against 1951–1980. The two baselines differ by about 0.3 °C. According to the WMO, 2024 was 1.55 ± 0.13 °C warmer than 1850–1900 — the first calendar year above 1.5 °C. That does not yet mean the Paris target is breached, since it refers to a 20-year average — but it means we are right at the threshold. WMO 2025 Copernicus C3S

2. Arktyka ociepla się kilka razy szybciej2. The Arctic warms several times faster

Średnia globalna ukrywa ogromne różnice. Lądy ocieplają się szybciej niż oceany, półkula północna szybciej niż południowa, a Arktyka najszybciej ze wszystkich — od 1979 roku prawie cztery razy szybciej niż świat. Mechanizm to sprzężenie lodu i albedo: biały lód odbija słońce, ciemna woda je pochłania, więc każdy stopiony kilometr kwadratowy przyspiesza topnienie następnego. The global mean hides huge differences. Land warms faster than oceans, the northern hemisphere faster than the southern, and the Arctic fastest of all — since 1979 almost four times faster than the world. The mechanism is the ice–albedo feedback: white ice reflects sunlight, dark water absorbs it, so every melted square kilometre speeds up the melting of the next. Rantanen 2022

3. Ocean pochłania 90 % ciepła3. The ocean absorbs 90 % of the heat

Atmosfera to cienka warstwa; prawdziwy magazyn energii to ocean. The atmosphere is a thin layer; the real energy store is the ocean. Of the excess heat Earth retains because of greenhouse gases, about 91 % goes into the ocean, about 5 % melts ice, 3 % warms the land and only about 1 % the air. That is why ocean heat content is the calmest, least “noisy” indicator of warming: it knows no El Niño or cold winters, rises almost linearly year after year, and has set a record in each of the recent years. 4. Morze podnosi się coraz szybciej4. The sea is rising faster and faster

Poziom morza rośnie z dwóch powodów: woda się rozszerza, gdy się ogrzewa (efekt termosteryczny), i przybywa jej z topniejących lodowców i lądolodów. Do 1993 r. mierzono go mareografami w portach, od 1993 r. — satelitami z dokładnością do milimetrów. Tempo wzrostu podwoiło się: z ok. 1,4 mm/rok w XX wieku do ponad 4 mm/rok w ostatniej dekadzie.Sea level rises for two reasons: water expands as it warms (the thermosteric effect), and more of it arrives from melting glaciers and ice sheets. Until 1993 it was measured by tide gauges in ports; since 1993 by satellites with millimetre accuracy. The rate has doubled: from about 1.4 mm/yr in the 20th century to over 4 mm/yr in the last decade.

5. Lód morski znika5. Sea ice is disappearing

Wrzesień to minimum lodu w Arktyce. September is the Arctic sea-ice minimum. Satellites have measured its extent daily since 1979. In that time the September extent has shrunk by about a third, and the ice has become thinner and younger — multi-year ice that survived several seasons is now rare. Antarctica was long the exception, but since 2016 its sea ice has also fallen sharply.

6. Przyczyna też jest zmierzona: CO₂6. The cause is measured too: CO₂

Tempo przyrostu też rośnie: z ok. 0,8 ppm/rok w latach 60. do 2–3 ppm/rok obecnie.Since 1958, on the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii, far from cities and factories, the concentration of CO₂ in the air has been measured. Charles Keeling started at 315 ppm. Today it is above 425 ppm — half again as much as before the industrial revolution, and more than at any time in the past 800,000 years, over which ice cores show a range of 172–300 ppm. The growth rate is rising too: from about 0.8 ppm/yr in the 1960s to 2–3 ppm/yr now. Lüthi 2008
